AFK Residency

Away From Keyboard Residency

In their current work, AFK Residency, AppleButter Animated designed a program to work with artist residents to consider automation, the interplay of leisure and labor, and the role of the artist. By using ABA’s painting robots to automate production, space and time is created for inquiry. The world is more automated than ever. Many today find our leisure to be the most automated and optimized activity. We spend our time in a designed-to-be frictionless attention economy that’s intertwined with labor and sold as play. All while labor continues to feel unending and undervalued. Do the efficiencies of today give us space for pleasure or simply allow us more time in an endless production loop?

AFK Residency works to reclaim the momentum of automation with a focus on explorative output and purposeful leisure for its residents. During the residency, the artist resident explores a practice of leisure connected to the painted work.

Flower Tongue

Sonnenzimmmer,
Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi

We worked with Sonnenzimmer, Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakinishi to code their program Flower Tongue for AFK Residency.

This experimental work centers around a virtual conversation between two talking flowers. In doing so, we actively explore the nature of both moving image and interpersonal communication by slowing down the process. This is not communication at the speed of sound, but at the speed of image.

Sonnenzimmer is the collaborative practice of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi. Their work investigates and challenges the preconceived notions of the graphic arts. Their experimental studio was established in 2006 in Chicago. Together, they explore the physical and psycho-physical nature of visualization through image-making, sculpture, writing, publishing, exhibitions, design, music, and performance. While they move through an array of media, their focus is on triangulating a deeper understanding of graphic expression at large.
